AUSTIN FILM SOCIETY ANNOUNCES MARCH AND APRIL PROGRAMMING
AUSTIN, TX – (February 1, 2018) Austin Film Society (AFS) celebrates local and global film with a series of SXSW Film discoveries, an exploration of CinemaTexas’s legacy, and a screening of DAZED AND CONFUSED, in conjunction with the launch of AFS’s first-ever house beer, Hazed and Confused IPA.
In April, we feature the best of New French Cinema for a 5-day festival showcasing some of the most exciting new names in global cinema, in partnership with Unifrance and the Premiers Plans Festival d’Angers. The full program will be announced in late March.

Texas Film Awards Screening: DAZED AND CONFUSED, 3/1
As we prepare for the 18th annual Texas Film Awards on March 8, we remember the many stars of Texas we’ve honored over the years. Classic Austin film and Texas Film Hall of Famer, DAZED AND CONFUSED, will be screened in conjunction with the launch of Hazed and Confused IPA, the first-ever AFS house beer, brewed in partnership with Pinthouse Pizza and Brewery.
SXSW Film @ 25, 3/2-3/21
To cap off SXSW Film’s Anniversary year, AFS presents a month-long series of some of our favorite discoveries from the festival’s 25-year history. It’s impossible to imagine our Austin film community without SXSW; the festival’s commitment to finding and celebrating unique visions has led to great filmmakers getting their start in Austin. Our small selection includes breakouts of now sought-after directors and unforgettable diamonds in the rough. Most screenings will be introduced by SXSW Director of Film Janet Pierson or Senior Film Programmer Jarod Neece.
Essential Cinema: CinemaTexas Rewind, 3/22-4/22
From the early ‘70s through the mid ‘80s, there was CinemaTexas, an on-campus film programming initiative at The University of Texas at Austin. Every Monday through Thursday night there was a separate two movie lineup programmed by Radio-Television-Film Department faculty and graduate students. Now a historic selection of the original program materials has been published by UT Press as CinemaTexas Notes: The Early Days of Austin Film Culture, and we are honored to welcome some of the CinemaTexas alumni back to reprise some of their favorite films.
2018 New French Cinema Week, 4/25-4/29
Our favorite annual showcase of new Francophone cinema returns for our biggest and most extensive line-up yet. Join us for five days of award-winning work from some of the most exciting new names in global cinema, in partnership with Unifrance and the Premiers Plans Festival d’Angers. The week will feature dialogues with Francophone filmmakers in-person, a French Cinema Week member mixer, animations, shorts, music-themed and family programming, and more. Full program to be announced in late March.

Science on Screen
Our latest Science on Screen Presentation coincides with the National Evening of Science on Screen. We will present a new documentary about science educator and broadcaster Bill Nye, along with a panel of experts on science education and the specific messaging concerns that confront them in today’s fragmented culture.

Forbidden Colors: The Transgressions Of Nagisa Ôshima
Nagisa Ôshima (1932-2013) brought themes of political and sexual radicalism to the screen with cinematic techniques that were themselves radical. Inspired by the deconstructive experiments of the French New Wave, Oshima created a Cinema that epitomized the boundary-pushing zeitgeist of young Japan. His most famous film, IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES, is the most controversial work of Japanese cinema, having been variously censored and banned upon initial release due to its uncompromising sexual imagery. His other works, while less explicit, are no less challenging and transgressive. We are proud to present this selection of films by the master.
