With Director Arturo Ripstein in person. A co-presentation of CineClub México, by the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin and Cine Las Americas International Film Festival.

From his earliest beginnings in the film medium, where he observed the machinations of the Mexican film business alongside his producer father and later worked as an assistant to Luis Buñuel, director Arturo Ripstein has had a vantage point of Mexican society and culture that few others can boast of. And he has chosen to use his talent to tell stories that few others would. He shows us lives on the fringes of culture and confronts us with the paradoxes of modern “civilized” life.

In doing so, he has become one of Mexico’s most lauded filmmakers. He has won more international awards than any of us can count, has received the prestigious National Award For Arts & Sciences, bestowed by the Government Of Mexico, and has been the subject of career retrospectives at the Museum Of Modern Art and the Art Institute Of Chicago.

We are honored to welcome Arturo Ripstein to Austin and to present his most recent feature, BLEAK STREET (2015), a skid row story of elderly prostitutes, little-people wrestlers, and murder that proves that Ripstein’s strong interest in the outsider, and his filmmaking powers, are as strong as ever.
