Showtime

Sat, May 18

Directed, written, and produced by hard-of-hearing filmmaker Alison O’Daniel, the film uses a series of tuba thefts in Los Angeles high schools as a jumping-off point to explore the nature of sound itself through several d/Deaf people telling stories in the film equivalent of a game of telephone.

The event will excerpt THE TUBA THIEVES and showcase clips from the full film.

This free community screening will have ASL interpreters, is presented with open captions, and will include a discussion with members from the Greater Austin Foundation for the Deaf. This project is supported in part by the City of Austin Economic Development Department.

This special screening is at Austin Public Library’s Austin Central Library location at 710 W. César Chávez St.

ABOUT INDIE LENS POP-UP

Through its roster of five documentary projects this season, Indie Lens Pop-Up will generate conversations on a range of topics impacting communities around the U.S., including the Muslim American experience, climate gentrification, and race and gender equity in mainstream media. This season’s topics also aim to expand perspectives through deeply personal stories, like what it means to live with Parkinson’s disease, and how the Deaf and hard of hearing community redefine what it means to listen. Screenings are free and open to the public.
